Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi (5a)
Constructed from 1996 to 2007 for 2 billion dirhams (USD $545M), the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a place of worship, beauty, and superlatives. It is the largest mosque in the UAE and one of the largest in the world. Covering more than 30 acres (not including landscaping and parking) it can accomodate over 40,000 worshippers.
The mosque has 4 minarets reaching 107m and 82 domes of different sizes. The carpet in the main prayer hall is the world's largest carpet; made in Iran, it weighs 35 tons and contains over 2.2 billion knots. The largest of seven chandeliers weighs 12 tons and is the 3rd largest in the world.
